Ruce, on the banks on the Danube

From Varna we took the bus to Ruce, which is one of the few places where it's possible to cross the border to Romania.

It's also a very pleasant city after the somewhat lack-lustre Black Sea experience. It's also an interesting place because it's so different from the other Bulgarian cities we visited, with a very noticeable Austro-Hungarian atmosphere and architecture. Because of it's location on the Romanian border, on the banks of the Danube river, it's also a prosperous town.

We enjoyed the short time we spent there, wandering around its vast Svodoba (=freedom) square, and visiting the Roman fort (which presentation-wise was a lot better than the Roman ruins in Varna, for example). We also had a kind of Communist flashback, staying at the National Hotel (it was cheap!).
