Dinner with Marie and Maite

Our good friend Marie was finally back in Nice, after a few months spent in Mexico with our other good friend JayJay. Naturally, this called for a reunion. AS Marie was busy as usual, wanted to go and see her parents and so forth, we ended up inviting her and Maite for dinner on Sunday. Great to see Marie again – we’ve sure missed her energy and French/Californian sense of fun (!?). We’d prepared a chicken tajine with pickled lemon for the occasion – a dish we’ve never tried before. It was pretty good, in the end, I reckon.

It’s also galette de rois season (apparently it’s called King cake in English – thanks Wikipedia – it’s a rather delicious pie made of puff pastry and frangipane, in honour of the Three Kings) – so naturally we had to get one of those (even though we were a couple of days late). What’s better, Marie also brought some cupcakes along, with some rather criminally good vanilla/custardy stuff to go with it.

To finish off the soiree, I finally got to try out the ‘44’ that has been waiting in the cellar for a bit more than 44 days (a ‘44’ is basically some home-distilled calvados, with an orange, with 44 bits of sugar, 44 grains of coffee, and a clove). It was rather good, if I may say so, and suitably potent.

All in all, an excellent way to spend a Sunday evening, then ;-)
